More information

This region is one of our personal favourites, we hope it will be yours too!

Situated north of Lake Balaton about 1.5 hours drive away from the capital city, you will have the chance to explore the unique 300-meter-long cave system in the heart of the charming town of Tapolca, north-west of Lake Balaton.

It was opened to the public in 1912. Small boats can be hired to explore the cave. Merely 15–20 m below the town a 5 km long cave system criss-crosses the Miocene limestone layers. This includes the 3.3 km long cave lake, which is mostly filled with karst water. The cave was discovered in 1903 during well digging. Children can go in the boats too with adults.

After exploring the cave you will have a nice meal on the terrace of a nearby lake in the town of Tapolca and then off to the beautiful Kinizsi Castle in Nagyvazsony and follow the route of hidden gems and on your way back to Budapest with a stop off at Veszprem town, the city of queens. The favourite place of the country's first king, Stephen (Istvan) I. and his wife Gizella. The city had its heydays during the reign of the first royal couple.
