Transport in Hungary

There are several options for flying to Hungary although most will arrive in the country at Budapest International (now called Liszt Ferenc airport). You don't have to fly into Budapest though there is also a direct flight to Debrecen, the second city, from Luton in the UK and also Milan in Italy. If you have no plans to visit Budapest it may be worth considering Hungary's neighbours for flights. Just across the border in the North West you can get direct UK flights to Bratislava (a Hungarian town up until the treaty of Trianon) in Slovakia and a little further is Vienna in Austria. To the South East it is possible to fly direct into Timisoara in Romania.

The Hungarian national transport system is extensive, cheap and reliable. Unfortunately a lot of it still dates from the former communist era so expect older, noisier vehicles compared to the Western Europe standard. Although Inter City trains are more comfortable and faster then regular trains.
