Nagyvázsony (Kinizsi castle)

More information

Kinizsi Castle is situated in the middle of the village Nagyvázsony in Veszprém county, in the Balaton Uplands National Park. Originating from the 14th century, it was extended in the 15th century in Gothic style and refurbished in the 16th-17th century. Today the castle is a stage for Renaissance games and festivals.

The castle is named after Pál Kinizsi (1432–1494) a miller boy. According to legend, king Matthias Corvinus was hunting in the Bakony forest near the mill where Kinizsi worked and asked for a drink; Kinizsi, to show his strength, served the cup on a millstone. The king was so impressed that he took the miller boy into his service, where Kinizsi's strength and loyalty earned him rapid promotion and became a general and a legendary commander in the army of the king.  He is famous for his victory over the Ottomans in the Battle of Breadfield in October 1479.
