More information

"Town Under The Town"  - Former Archbishop Wine-Cellar-System.

After the departure of the Turks György Fenessy, the bishop of Eger, returned and not wanting to reside in the castle purchased land to build his own palace. The volcanic rock was excavated from the beneath the nearby hillside and they achieved a double result: the palace was finished and directly below it a wine-cellar-system. Here they stored the wines that were produced from Gyöngyös to Munkačevo (today Ukraine). The wine-cellar-system runs for 3 km and at its peak contained 11-12 million litres per year.

Today the wine cellar hosts an exhibition of the history of Eger from 1004 and is counted in the top 21 attractions in Hungary.
